Computers I used until 1992

I did start my 'computer-career' as a 13-year old on an ORIC1, a machine that in those days had 64K RAM, which I was VERY proud of, since all the others only had 16K. I then worked on several PC's before I discovered VAX/VMS, which has made the whole difference in my life. If you cannot stand VAXes, think of it as the only way to get to know me, without VAX, I would never be on the network at all. But when I am, I am using an IBM (I am not specially fond of that). If you have any doubts, I am VAXinated :) My motto is: A VAX a day, keep the doctor away :)

At home I have an Amstrad PC1512, a machine that I used to be able to live with simply because I had a modem and could contact the world with it, and which I could do my programming on when I am at home. Now I have a 486dx33 with 16 MB RAM and .75GB disk. It's running Windows'95, an operating system I am not too fond of. As with my Amstrad, I mostly use it as a terminal with my modem, and in addition I play games on it :) I am NOT very fond of PC's, when they are running DOS or Windows, when running Linux, I cannot help but enjoy them.

Computers used after 1992

Occasionally I still use VAX running VMS, but mostly for fun. At the moment I spend my time on VAX running ULTRIX - which for illiterates means another "dialect" of UNIX - or PC running Linux - yet another "dialect". I will once have a laptop running Linux myself, it will be called ...? :)

IRC

I started using IRC in -89, but didn't get really hooked until november -92... Now I'm on daily... You'll find me :)

What I do

I study informatics and telematics at the university of Trondheim. My master's is going to be written about networking. But since I didn't intend to study computer science (was going for biology, but got hooked on computers...), I have studied maths, physics, linguistics and psychology. For now. I will add courses of the latin and greek language and culture later. I also study some business economics private, which is expensive... Not to mention my studies in French, I adore it!!! I started studying it, because I got the final push from an old boyfriend, he knew French, so he pushed me into it. Boy, am I happy for that!!! :) I have gotten my first degree, I am a Cand.Mag. at the time being. I am planning a doctors degree, I want to become a professor... So, to make my life go on I work as an advisor at the university. Not too interesting, but I make money ! I also teach some pascal, and I am a leader for a network-group, giving some classes there. This has become more and more timeconsuming, so I hardly have time for anything else.

My life so far

I was born in Hammerfest, the (at that time)northmost town on earth. I was there only for two weeks, then they let me go home with my mother, to Øksfjord, the cutest little place on the west cost of Finnmark, northern Norway. After living there for 9 years, we moved south, to Rissa, not far from Trondheim. I hated it, and when I was 18, I moved to Trondheim, with my family. I love this town, so that's great :) I soon moved away from home, and I got myself a swedish boyfriend, living in Gothenburg, and before I knew it, I had forgotten my studies and wanted to live in Sweden. I got into the university of Gothenburg, got myself a room, and made plans to move. Then my boyfriend and I broke up and my father died, within a couple of days, and all my plans went down the drain. I had to stay with my mother for a long time, since she could not be alone. I did go to Gothenburg, took a couple of courses, had a great time there, met a lot of nice people. I now live in a one-bedroom appartement not far from the University, and I enjoy it very much, though I am hardly there, because of Nettverksgruppa.

Addictions

I have a couple of addictions in my life, first of all, I can mention that I have been suffering of bulimia since I was about 12 years old. I am improving, but I am still not recovered.

When I started using the internet, I got hooked (who hasn't, really?). I was hooked for about 3-4 years, then I finally realised that this was not productive, and I decided to quit. I took down my computer, let my father have it, and went offline for a month. It was hard, but I made it (well, I did get online once). After that I made myself a couple of rules (never online on weekends and after midnight) and stuck to them. And even if I have been tempted to sit online for hours after hours, I have managed not to. And today I am totally over that. As a result I am often in the media to talk about it. I will provide links about this at a later state.

What I am

I am a Viking!!! So watch out ;) No, seriously, I once was a member of the Viking-club here in Trondheim, my name is Freyja Sigurdsdottir, I have my name after Freyja (or Frøya if you like), the goddess of fertility ;) Otherwise I find this section rather stupid, but couldn't resist. My hopes of one day becoming a gnoser, has come true, since my last update :)

Interests

No, that's a tricky question... What can I say, it varies a lot !!! I like to make clothes, I like listening to music, reading books, hacking on my computer, talking to people with help of computers, making friends, play in the snow, take sunbaths, visiting friends, talk, you name it, I want to do it :) What can be more fun than hang out with friends, have a beer (well, I hate beer, but I don't mind my friends drinking it) and just talk??? :)

Sports

"I play handball, football (soccer), I swim, I ride horses, I am a football-trainer (soccer) for a womens team, I am an autorized referee in handball and football, and I play rugby when I get time :) " This was said by me a couple of years ago, then I have taken a break, though I'm swimming and play around sports a bit :)

Music

When it comes to music I like a lot of things. My favourite of all is Prince, nothing can compair to him (to say it with the song he wrote for Shinead O'Connor). I also like other popular artists : Jean Jaques Goldman, Wet Wet Wet, INXS, Richard Marx. When it comes to rock, I'm more into the 'oldies' : Slade, Foreigners, Shakin' Steevens. I'm very fond of classical music, Beethoven, Ravel, Mozart and Bach are my favourites. I also like the voice of Placido Domingo, and Pavarotti singing "Ave Maria"... Ahhh, I don't say no more! If you ever get hold of something from Arve Tellefsen, listen to it. He is an excellent violin-virtuoso! I'm also fond of esotronic music, what is more popularly called "New Age" (which it is not ;)): Jean Michel Jarre, Vangelis, Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream are my favourites.

Movies

I like comedies, most of the time, but I can watch anything. At the moment I do not like love-stories (I don't want to be reminded of what I'm missing ;)) and I have never liked movies with lots of blood and gore... Some of my favourite films : "Top-gun" (Did you see those planes ? Wow...), "Rainman", "Jurassic Park", I have to admit I liked "Stargate", I love "Landscape in fog" (Greek one, created by Angoloupoulos), I couldn't help but laugh of "Much ado about nothing" (Shakespeare wrote the book)m like "When Harry Met Sally" and of course "The Shining" with Jack Nicholson. And I have seen "Cat people" some times. "L'amant" and "La Belle Histoire" made an impression too. I have found myself increasingly fond of actionmovies as well. By the way, Mel Gibson looks great in "Leathal Weapon"... (I *love* all of them, they are getting better and better!!!)

Books

I like Shakespeare, most fond of "A midsummernight-dream" and "King Lear", my absolute favourite writer is Simenon and his books of Maigret, I like Ibsen, Foenhuus (those two are Norwegian writers), Proust, Kafka, Jaroslav Seifert, I read the most. I am also very interested in mythology, Greek, Roman and Nordic. Of course I like the series about "Hitch-hikers guide to the galaxy"!

My favourite guy

Some people think they might find at least sexpartners on the net, and here is a sample of how it might look.

At the moment I find Patrick Stewart incredibly sexy, mostly because of how his role in Star Trek:TNg, Jean-Luc Picard. These days I say I am in love with and old guy that doesn't exists. *sigh*

I don't really care how he looks like (I have ex-boyfriends to show that!), as long as he loves me. He shall love me for what I am, not what he want me to be. I am who I am, so he can just stuff it, if he want to change me! What he does for a living is irrelevant, though I wish he has academic interests, I want to discuss things.
My dreamguy is, on the other hand, dark-haired, have brown eyes, a bit taller than me, is French, and that's about it. I doubt I will ever meet one like that... At least not to love...*sigh*

I have a distinct feeling that I'll marry a man with a beard, so if you have one... You know how to contact me ;)

I think I got it all now :) If there is something more you want to know, just ask :) Bye, and take care !

"Why do things easy, when they can be done the hard way?"

"Love is the feeling you feel, when you feel you haven't felt that feeling before"

"STEINAAAAAAAAAAR!!!"

Being part of the collective mind of “Trekker devotees” I have been programmed to relish each and every installment of the Trek series no matter how lackluster and theoretically inconceivable the story may be. The odds of me despising an episode of “Star Trek” are about as great as finding dilithium crystals for sale at a Wall Mart. Criticism is futile.
