The albums White-Out Conditions (1987) A young trio makes their debut with beautiful, melancholic music. Dark, ethereal synth-harmonies are labeled as arctic by an international audience. The album is unique, but can if anything remind about bands like Cocteau Twins. First and foremost, it is the relationship between Anneli Drecker's and Liz Frasier's voices that make the comparison natural, but also the combination of ethnical elements and electronics, something that has become Bel Canto's signature. Birds Of Passage (1990) Anneli's voice becomes more central, and the dance-rhythms get a larger room in the band's musical landscape. Here, they develop their moody music into a more timeless pop-expression. Maybe their strongest. Shimmering, Warm & Bright (1992) "This is a triumph", Adresseavisen's reviewer wrote in 1992. Warmer moods from Bel Canto, the arctic character melted somewhat after Geir Jenssen left the group, and gave the band an even softer and floating character. The song "Shimmering, Warm & Bright" became maybe their first big hit, with good reason. Thereby, this was also the end of the "indie"-existence - from comparisons with Cocteau Twins, just as natural references became Enya and Kate Bush. Magic Box (1996) The album that should really make the break for Bel Canto, but the definite single was lacking. Somewhat overambitious productionwise, and bears the mark of lacking spontanity after a lenghty production-process. An international cooperation where, among o thers, Jah Wobble participates, without raising the standars noticeably. Rush (1998) "Rush" looks as if it is going to be Bel Canto's new "Birds Of Passage". With a rougher soundscape than what one has heard from the duo since they were a trio, they are back in a cold poetry-world which they earlier explored together with Geir "Biosphere" Jenssen. A somewhat more reserved production than the two prequels, but still with elegant melodies that combine ethnical and electronic elements.
